We’re excited to share some great news—Neshobe is starting a Unified Sports team!
What is Unified Sports?
Unified Sports, a program of Special Olympics, brings students with and without intellectual disabilities together on the same team. They train, compete, and most importantly, build friendships. More than 60 schools in Vermont already participate, and programs range from elementary through high school.
Key Highlights of Unified Sports:
● Inclusive Teams: Students with intellectual disabilities (“athletes”) and students without disabilities (“partners”) play side-by-side.
● Teamwork & Friendship: The motto says it best—“On the field we’re teammates and off the field we’re friends.”
● School-Based Activities: Schools across Vermont host Unified teams, supported by the Vermont Principals’ Association and Special Olympics Vermont.
● Positive Impact: Unified Sports helps build community, reduce bullying, and promote healthy activity for all students.
What’s Happening at Neshobe?
We plan to begin team-building practices after the holiday break, meeting once a week after school for about an hour to an hour and a half. Once we gauge student interest, we’ll share more details about practices and the program. Our goal is to begin competing in the spring—starting with Unified Bocce!
