We are Kind

We are Safe

We are Responsible

September 17, 2021

Dear Neshobe Families,

It is hard to believe we have completed week 3.  This was the first full week that all students have been in school since March 2020.  While we are still in the midst of the pandemic and still wearing masks, the school is feeling more “normal”.  Everyday we are greeted by smiling faces and students excited to learn.  Their enthusiasm is contagious!

Morning Drop Off: When dropping off students, please make sure that students are completely ready to go when the car stops and an adult let’s them out. This means having a mask on or in hand, having backpacks zipped and ready and having whatever else they need ready as well.

Open House: Due to the continued concerns arising from COVID, this year’s Open House will be virtual. The link to the Open House will be available on the Neshobe Website on Thursday evening, September 23rd. We are hoping to offer in-person opportunities in the spring or as circumstances allow.  More information to come.

PTO: The PTO met on Monday, September 13th.  Members discussed upcoming events, fundraising opportunities as well as the desire to increase membership. Thank you to those participating!

Kindness Challenge: This past week, the 6th graders embarked on a Kindness Challenge.  Every Monday (or the first day of the school week), each 6th grade student will be given an Act of Kindness on a slip of paper to complete before Friday.  These acts can range from helping out a friend, saying hello to those they meet in the hall, drawing a picture for a younger student to holding the door open for someone.  Once they complete their act, they hand in the piece of paper containing their act to the teacher.

By the end of this week, we predict that the 6th graders will have performed over 60 Acts of Kindness and over 180 acts by the end of September.

Our actual 6th grade total this week is 110 Acts of Kindness!!!!  Kudos to all 6th grade students who are taking up the challenge to be kind!

Kindness Matters- Acts of Kindness Daily Calendar: Someone once said, "Kindness is like snow-it beautifies everything it covers."

A child in your family will be bringing home a monthly kindness calendar.  Each day, you will find a suggestion for an act of kindness that can be done that day or any other day.  We hope that as we pay these acts of kindness forward, kindness will spread throughout our school and out into our homes and community.  We all have an opportunity to do something great by just being a little kinder.

Wishing you peace.

Wendy Fjeld (AKA Miss Wendy)

Substitute Teachers and Paraprofessionals: If you know of anyone who would be interested in subbing at Neshobe, please send them to either Anne Jones, Katie Lufkin or me (Vicki).  We are struggling to fully staff not only all of our current positions, but substitutes as well!  Thank you!!!!

Some Notes from Around the School

Kindergarten -

(Mrs. Seigle)

In Kindergarten this week, we have established our classroom rules:

We are safe. We are kind. We are responsible. We have been working on a quiet all by myself time where students enjoy books and build stamina. We have been practicing handwriting (writing our names, doing letter formation of P and B, and have had several attempts for writing numbers 1-5 to gain control of our pencil grip!)

 Third Grade -

Third grade has begun “Math Workshop” in addition to math lessons in the classroom. This model provides an opportunity for  students to work with different teachers as they hone their math skills. The weather has allowed us plenty of time to be outside as we explore “My Backyard.” “My Backyard” is a program that enhances reading, writing and math skills while exploring our natural world and local community. Third graders are also making very good progress learning to work in large groups this year, creating classroom norms and learning schoolwide expectations. We look forward to seeing everyone at our virtual open house!

Third Grade Spanish students are learning the vowels in Spanish and practicing the numbers one to twelve (uno a doce) in order to tell time. Fourth and Fifth Graders are reviewing colors and learning how to talk about weather. We have been reading a story called "La tortuga y el gato" (The Turtle and the Cat). Sixth Grade Spanish students have been learning the verb "ser" (to be) and "tener" (to have) and using them to make physical descriptions (descripciones físicas).

Art -

In art class the younger students have finished their “scribble monsters” and we have hung many of them up in the lobby. Kindergartners have recently been practicing their cutting and gluing skills while making collages. Over the next few weeks all students will be working on their Square 1 Art project. We are running the Square 1 Art fundraiser early this year. Students will finish their work by mid-October and order packets (with stickers) will arrive in early November. If you have any questions about the Square 1 Art fundraiser please feel free to email me at jbrodowski@rnesu.org or visit square1art.com. Thanks!!!

Library -

We've been talking about how we choose books during library class over the past week. Take a moment to ask your child about how they decide what book to choose or read next. What makes a book "just right" for them? In the upper grades, we've talked about many different ways to browse and find good books---and next we'll be learning about searching the online catalog and our e-books/audiobooks collection using our Chromebooks. Thank you for supporting your student in being a responsible library user!

Have a terrific Weekend!!!!

Sincerely,

Vicki and Dan
