We are Kind

We are Safe

We are Responsible

October 15, 2021

Dear Neshobe Families,

We are thrilled to all be back in-person as of today.  It is great seeing the students and staff back filling the classrooms and the halls! The decision to close was not an easy one. We truly appreciate the patience, understanding, support and cooperation of all as we navigated through the past week.

Zander the Firefighter:

Zander was a great help to Mr. Clay this week suiting up in firefighter gear as he assisted Mr. Clay when he spoke with first graders on being a firefighter.  Thank you Zander!

Dismissal:

For parents who are picking up their students, please wait away from the classrooms.  We are asking that parents wait in the back parking lot or in front of the Brick building.  Please go to the exterior door of the classroom to pick up your student at 2:35.

Also, we have had concerns come forward regarding the amount of parking on the street at the end of the day. This is blocking traffic and views for those trying to get out of the Neshobe driveway.  There is room available in the front parking lot for those picking up at the brick building and room available out back for those picking up in the main building.

Thank you!

Toys:

Some students have started to bring personal toys and cards into school.  This practice is being discouraged as objects can get damaged, can interfere with the learning process as they are brought out at inappropriate times, and can get lost.  Items will be removed from students when they interfere with the learning process or are being used at inappropriate times or in an inappropriate manner.

Kindness Challenge: Last month, the 6th graders embarked on a Kindness Challenge.  Every Monday (or the first day of the school week), each 6th grade student will be given an Act of Kindness on a slip of paper to complete before Friday.

Our 6th grade total for the week is 188 Acts of Kindness!!!

Our total for three weeks is 544!!!

Kudos to all 6th grade students who are taking up the challenge to be kind!

SOCKTOBER at Barstow Memorial:

It's Socktober!!!!!!!! Barstow Memorial 3rd grade is hosting a sock donation throughout October. They are aiming to donate 450 socks to homeless shelters, children in foster care, and families in need.

Any donations can be sent in with your kids. A collection box is located in the front office and will be there through Oct 29th.

The 3rd graders at Barstow thank you in advance.

News from our Classrooms and Integrated Arts:

Library -

During October and November in Library class:

Kindergarteners are studying the work of author/illustrator Kevin Henkes, (you can check out his website here)

First, Second, Third and Fourth graders are participating in the Global Read Aloud picture book study of author/illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh, and our Middle Level students are learning about Digital Citizenship using the curriculum from Common Sense Media, which also has great resources for families! Take some time to ask your kiddos about the library. What have they learned that is interesting? What are they borrowing to read? And please do reach out to me with questions---Ms. Fjeld

Grade 3 -

Neshobe's Third Grade Classes each took a field trip this week related to their "My Backyard" theme. Ms. Best's class hiked to Silver Lake and Mrs. Keith's class did a Geography tour of our communities. Both classes have been learning about mapping, geography and nature. They look forward to sharing what they learned with others.

Mrs. Coolidge -

Students in Mrs. Coolidge’s class worked with Mr. B to create two huge paper mache volcanoes! Students visited the art room in small groups and used paper mache, paint, hot glue, rocks, and other found objects to create these volcanoes. This project gave students an opportunity to learn more about using paper mache as a sculpture material, to work together as a group, and to celebrate the learning they have done in their classroom about volcanoes and other natural disasters. Later this week we plan to “erupt” the volcanoes outdoors using a combination of baking soda and vinegar. We hope to create a video and share it online!

Art -

Big thanks to Tyrell Vaughn for creating an awesome painting on the art room door! Tyrell used old house paints to drip, drizzle, and splatter paint onto the door. He also learned a little bit about the famous American painter Jackson Pollock in the process. Everyone who comes to the art room loves the new door! - Mr. B.

Have a great weekend!
